Cruise to Somerset, KY:

The Wagners, Hodges, and Hursts met early Saturday morning at the truckstop in Dayton to begin our trip.
We traveled to Harriman to eat breakfast at the Cracker Barrel and await the arrival of Donnie Ellis. After a great breakfast, we were ready to head out. It was a beautiful day driving up scenic Hwy 27 with clear, sunny skies.
We got to Somerset with just enough time to check into the motel, throw our bags in the rooms and head downtown for the Cruise-In.
Once we arrived to line up at the gate, I was surprised at the amount of traffic already lined up, so the Hodges pulled forward, Donnie Ellis backed up and we squeezed in, but it was really bumper to bumper. After a very short wait the gates opened and we were on our way.
David and Mary Wagner found us great parking spaces together, then we hunted for shade in doorways to settle in and enjoy the day. So many beautiful cars and a very festive feel for the day and great friends to hang out with...couldn't ask for more.
We headed back to the Country Inn & Suites to get ready to head for supper and find a place to set up our chairs and enjoy the cruise the other cars were going to put on.
We decided to go to Ruby Tuesday's for supper. We managed to find 4 spaces together in front of the restaurant facing the Cruising Strip and put out chairs in the grass in front of them.

It was a great time sitting around the table eating, talking and laughing. Afterward, while we were relaxing and watching the cruise on the strip, it was like we had a mini-Falcon show as so many people coming in and out of the restaurant would stop to admire our cars and tell their own “Falcon stories”.
The guys, as usual, know their cars so even as dark fell, they seemed to know the cars by just the headlights. It was a great day for fun and friendship.
After a good night’s sleep we met at the Cracker Barrel in Somerset to eat breakfast and then head towards home. It was a great weekend and all of us enjoyed it, I just wish everyone could have went.

Featured Falcon:

Let me introduce myself. They call me “Flivver”. I am a 1963 ½ Ford Falcon Futura Sports Coupe, 2 door hardtop. I’ve been around for a long time, but I’m not getting older---I’m getting better!!!

In the beginning, I was created in the half year by the Fort Motor Company for a man in Florida who thought I would be just what he wanted. After all, I was a special order. He just kept me for a little while because as fate would have it, I was not his idea of a dream car. He just let me go, and suddenly I was used before my time.

Things have a way of working out though because another man came into my life. He was young, just 20, and planning to get married. He really liked me and said that I was just what he wanted, but they said he couldn’t have me because he didn’t have something called “Credit”. I just knew that he was going to leave and I would never see him again; but then this nice lady who was going to be his new mother-in-law decided that I really was a nice little car since I was still under Ford’s new car warranty. She spoke up and said she would sign for me. This was in April of 1964.

Now being a mom and protective by nature, she wanted to put my papers in her name and her daughter’s name. After all, the June 64 wedding was yet to be; but shoot, I didn’t care. All I wanted to do was go home with that young fellow. Well I did and I even got to go on their honeymoon. Someone used shoe polish and wrote “Just Married”, “Hot Springs Tonight”, and stuff like that on my paint! He stopped and gave me a good bath on the way to Arkansas. When we came back to Florida, that young fellow paid all of my payments and it took him three years to do it. When my title came back from the bank, I finally got his name on the title. It was finally official that I really did belong to him.

He left me one time for a year and a half- something about a war and going to Guam with the Air Force. I was afraid of what would happen to me, but he wrote down all my instructions and told his wife what to do to take good care of me. She did a pretty good job with the help of her dad, but I sure was glad to see him come back home safely. I know he missed me.

He put me in a few car shows when I was young, but that was sorta tough. You see, he was a firefighter and he only got two days off in a row. If the show lasted for three days, we just had to forget about it because he refused to leave me alone in a strange place. Then we went to Auto Fest in Kissimmee, FL and he met people who owned some of my Falcon siblings. He joined their car club and I got to go to family reunions real often. I loved the weekends we all spent together. They called them “FCA Regionals”.

I have been to a few proms. His girls think I am pretty neat. They would get all dressed up pretty and get into my back seat with their boyfriends. It was okay though because my man was the one in control behind my steering wheel. When we got to the proms there were a lot of fancy long limos, but I was the one that everyone was looking at. His girls loved being “Special Delivered”.

He has taken real good care of me. I was always the one that got to stay under the roof while all the others had to stay outside. Yes, there have been others, and some even caused me some concern. One time he thought about not keeping me. He put a sign on me and people kept asking him questions and looking at me. But then one day a man touched me the wrong way and slammed my door real hard. My man got upset and told him that I was not for sale anymore.

In the long run though, I was always his favorite and he let me know it, too. When he first brought me home, he used to wash and wax me so much that my paint got to looking less than pretty. But he took me back to Ford and bought me a new paint job. Same color – just pretty again. Cost him $98.00!

There have been other special treats, too. Like the time he treated me to a new vinyl top. I got so tired of the hot Florida sun beating down on me. And new tires – I got them whenever I needed them. He got me a new engine – a 302 and changed my 4-speed to a 5-speed. The man and his wife made me all new custom seat covers, door panels, and even a package tray that has “FORD” stitched into it. I got new carpet and a new headliner, too. Like I said – “Special Treats”.

Saturday nights were always so much fun. My man would take me to dinner at the Texaco and buy me nothing but the best. Then we would go “cruising” at Old Town in Kissimmee. We got to drive around while people looked at me, took my picture, and said nice things about me. When we got home, he would rub me down and cover me up. He has been good to me, and I have been good for him.

He is the only one who has turned me on for 46 years, and he has kept me looking better than the new ones. But my man just can’t give me the attention that I am accustomed to anymore. We don’t go out that much these days, and he is talking about putting that sign back on me again and telling me that he will make sure that I get another good home and another good man. Someone who will spoil me like he has.
